Visual Turntablism Hits Edinburgh Fringe
One of the most intriguing shows currently running at Edinburgh's famous Fringe Festival is taking visual turntablism to a whole new level.
Rapper and beatboxing world-record holder Testament has teamed up with world champion turntablist DJ Woody to create a theatre piece entitled Blake Remixed.
Running until August 29th, the hour-long show celebrates William Blake, one of the greatest counter-cultural voices in British history, and explores how the poet and philosopher influenced Testament's own career and his work teaching hip hop to prisoners.
DJ Woody, the main protagonist in our own Scratch Obsession, displays his unique gifts, illustrating the narrative by scratching audio in sync with interactive visual projections.
This incredibly complex performance is just the latest in a number of forays into theatre for turntablists. In September Kid Koala begins touring his show Nufonia Must Fall with a team of puppeteers and a camera crew that edits the footage in real time, creating a silent film before the eyes of the audience.
