About

Ever wondered what a record needle looks like at 1000 frames per second?

Macho Zapp is an online magazine dedicated to producing captivating and immersive investigations into music. In the only publication of its kind, we cross longform storytelling with the music video to explore music from new angles - the movement of a DJ’s crossfader or the smallest vibrations of a record needle - so that each feature is something to be experienced, not just read. The features can be described as a series of “living” photographs, painstakingly created to absorb the viewer into the content.

Kill the DJ - "A website where music can be read, heard, discussed and understood."

JOURNALISM, MEETS ART, MEETS SCIENCE

Blurring the lines between art, journalism and science, we bring you meticulously researched music features, illustrated by striking video and sound, designed to immerse you in the subject matter.

An antidote to the click-bait era, our mission is to push boundaries, entertain, explore, spellbind and examine those elements of music that you've always wondered about. In this sense Macho Zapp is closer to a production company than a magazine, purveyors of a new artform born of the web.

PIONEERS

Our first two features each contained a world-first: for Needle Habit we became the first to shoot a Shure M44-7 record needle in slow motion (filmed by a company that helps the military test firearms); in Scratch Obsession we became the first to analyse the physics, psychology and philosophy within turntablism. We measured the speed of the crossfader, the kinetic energy created and the biomechanics of the DJ's hand movements.

SCIENTIFIC COLLABORATIONS

Connecting art and science, our own meticulous research has led to collaborations with the scientific community. Psychologist Prof. Lauren Stewart of London’s famous Goldsmiths University and biomechanics expert Prof. Anthony Redmond both made vital contributions to Scratch Obsession and this has sparked two separate research projects and received praise across the board.

Deep Overwater, our feature on the creation of the bass guitar, is also attracting interest from the world of science for its line of enquiry into haptic feedback and acoustics.

IMPACT

With thousands of page views, recognition from Ransom Note, Redbull Music, Serato, Juno Records, and Beatport, Macho Zapp has made quite an impact in its short life. Our slow motion YouTube video Needle Drop received 50,000 views in the first two weeks.

This is just the beginning.
